THE LAST MUSICIAN OF AUSCHWITZ

It was a privilege and a challenge to work on this groundbreaking feature documentary for Two Rivers Media and the BBC to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. This astonishing film explores the stories of music and musicians from within the camp, combining interviews with dramatisation and historical photography.

I was commissioned to design and animate maps seen throughout the film, as well as to design and animate the main film title, chapter titles, and develop a consistent photo treatment for historical assets. My role was a small one but I’m immensely proud of the work, and the feature was rightly celebrated and praised upon release.

For the titles and chapter headings I relied on a the visual motif of musical staff notation, translating the thoughts and experiences of the musicians into the bold and minimalist imagery of sheet music but twisting it until it becomes chaotic, nightmarish and discordant.
